Watering Can symbolising growth

Fiona Lower – Scientia Medico Limited

Although still classed as ‘under-represented’ in Plymouth’s business community, some of the most inspiring, entrepreneurial and determined women are shining a light and showing the way for other women in the city thinking about starting their own business. Single mother of three, 42-year-old Fiona Lower is now one of these role models having set up ‘Scientia Medico Limited’.

Fiona is a specialist medical report writer for Continuing Health Care Funding, writing reports that go to review and appeal panels. “I have been a qualified staff nurse for the past 22 years working in various sectors within the Plymouth Teaching Primary Care Trust. My business idea was formulated in November 2010 when I identified the need for a professional medical report writer in the field of Continuing Health Care.” Fiona decided her new business model would enable her to transfer her skills and expertise to the private sector, so set about finding support to help her get started.

“Outset was my constant guide throughout the process of starting my business. I was referred by Outset to the South West Investment Group (SWIG) and I applied for a loan. Following completion of my business plan used to obtain a successful loan application with National  Westminster Bank my business was then set up three months later.”

“My new business provides thorough reports for patients, family members and firms of solicitors representing patients who are wishing to appeal against decisions made by local authority panels. The basis of an appeal is to examine any procedural impropriety, or any evidence that has been overlooked and not included in the patients’ health needs. I write between 8,000 and 20,000 words depending on the complexity of the case being reviewed.”

“I am indebted to Outset, and all the other organisations that gave me the confidence, and helped me set up a business that I am so passionate about. The support hasn’t stopped there as I still get help advice and guidance to ensure my first year is successful and that my business continues to prosper.”

Outset Plymouth has been funded by the ERDF Competitiveness and Employment programme, which invests in activities that will have a long-term impact on the growth and develop of the local economy.
